Why do people become famous for dumb quotes or quotes that don’t make sense?

Just because they don’t make sense to YOU doesn’t mean that they don’t make sense or are dumb. In a case like this, it is because they phrased things that many people believe anyway in an appealing way.

The person is already famous BEFORE they start being quoted.
Also, the qoute you use as an example is quite true. Apparently you just don’t understand what it means.
I see your added note and I repeat…THEY ARE ALREADY FAMOUS, that is the only reason people are quoting them.
You don’t find your qoutes in the paper or on wikipedia. Just FAMOUS people.
That quote is intelligent because it employs irony. Wrap your head around that and maybe it won’t seem so dumb anymore.
If your looking for Dumb quotes-google Bobby Knight+he is a recently retired basketball coach famous for the Dumb. insensitive stuff he says.-it’s actually good for a laugh.
I used to feel the same way, but then I realized that life experience makes you realize what quotes mean…
For example:
If you play with fire, you’re gonna get burnt.
(Has a deep meaning. If you put yourself in dangerous situations, you will suffer)
To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.
(The one you love may just be another stranger in this world, but he is your world.)
Expect the unexpected…
(You can’t ever anticipate what life is going to throw at you…)
I know some quotes seem stupid, but in the future, you’ll have experiences that make you go Oh, NOW I understand what that meant…
