I believe Napoleon said it when explaining to the Pope that he would crown himself Emperor and not the Pope, who normally did it as sign of his blessing.

Yes.. that was that short little man Napoleon..
I don’t think that quote is attributable to Napoleon. In fact, I can’t think of anyone who said it quite that way. Perhaps your thinking of:
The significance of a man is not in what he attains, but rather what he longs to attain.
-Kahlil Gibran
Here’s one quote about man is not measured:
They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right. Winston Churchill said that the destiny of man is not measured by material computation. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we are spirits-not animals. And he said, There is something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty.
Quoted in this article:
I found nothing about Napoleon stating any such quote (as you noted) to the Pope.
Here is info on Pope Pius VI:
which mentions Napoleon’s attack on the Papal States.
Pope Pius VI was born on Dec.27, 1717, and died on Aug. 29, 1799.
Here is info on Napoleon:
which does have a section about Napoleon becoming Emperor and placing the crown upon his own head (and not allowing the Pope Pius VII to do it) on December 2, 1804.
Napoleon was born on Aug. 15, 1769, and died on May 5, 1821.
Here is info on Pope Pius VII:
Pope VII was born on Aug.14, 1740, and died on Aug. 20, 1823.
